What is poetry for?

Here are some of the definitions the poets gave in the short interviews:

What is poetry for?

- Poetry is for trespassing and feeling at home at the same time.

- Change / Weakness / Celebration

- Experiencing the full range of human emotions.

- It is for itself. It is “to be”.

- Poetry is for asking questions and for thinking about what their answers might be.

- Poetry is there to track and mark the hidden speech, the hidden life, the hidden dream.

- Poetry is for everyone to recognize how many layers they’re made of, and how much depth they have.

And here's where you can find the poetry videos and texts that are contained in the introductory sequence that I used in class today:

And let's not forget the answer given in Dead Poets Society: "The purpose of poetry is... to woo women."

Excerpt from "Dead Poets Society"

We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race.
